Geoffrey Hinton Resigned from Google to Warn About AI

In May 2023, Geoffrey Hinton - one of the most important figures in the history of artificial intelligence - resigned from his position at Google so he could speak freely about the dangers of AI without concern for his employer.

Hinton has warned that:

• AI systems could become more intelligent than humans sooner than expected
• There is no known reliable method to ensure superintelligent AI remains aligned with human values
• The competitive dynamics between AI companies create pressure to move fast at the expense of safety
• He partly regrets his life’s work given the potential consequences
