Yoshua Bengio, one of the three “godfathers of deep learning” and a Turing Award recipient, chaired the International Scientific Report on the Safety of Advanced AI, published in advance of the 2024 AI Seoul Summit.
The report, drawing on contributions from leading AI researchers worldwide, concluded that:
- Current AI systems already pose risks that are not fully understood
- Future, more capable systems could pose severe or even catastrophic risks
- Existing governance mechanisms are not sufficient to manage these risks
- International coordination on AI safety is urgently needed
The report represents a significant scientific consensus that current governance is not keeping pace with AI capabilities.
